Description:
Like many communities across the country, the City of Auburn, Alabama, proudly celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by renewing our commitment to equal access for all of our residents and visitors.

When we began exploring training opportunities to help our local businesses understand and comply with provisions of the ADA, we realized that we could make the biggest impact by providing education and support for our design and building professionals who, in turn, could integrate the multitude of complex technical standards into our built environment.

We are excited to partner with the Auburn University Office of Accessibility, the U.S. Access Board, and our Auburn Chamber of Commerce to offer this technical training seminar. It is our hope that this conference will help you, as architects, engineers and builders, reduce the barriers to full participation in community life.

This conference is intended to provide the latest information on the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design and proposed PROWAG (Public Right-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines) standards along with implementation strategies, and best practices for achieving compliance. The topics presented are designed for professionals involved in the design and build industries. Sessions will be presented by the U.S. Access Board, the agency that developed the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design. The sessions on the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design will address aspects of parking, accessible entrances, accessible routes and interior spaces. The session on the PROWAG will cover pedestrian access to sidewalks and streets, including crosswalks, curb ramps, street furnishings, pedestrian signals, parking, and other components of public rights-of-way. Sessions will also cover Chapter 10 of the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, which deals with removing physical barriers that can prevent children and adults with disabilities from accessing all elements of recreational activities, such as playgrounds, sporting facilities and outdoor spaces.

Upon completion, participants will be better able to: understand and implement ADA provisions in the design, construction and inspection of new facilities and understand the role of ADA during an alteration or change of occupancy of an existing building, as well as pedestrian accessibility in public rights-of-way.

Each day attended will earn 0.8 continuing education credits through the International Code Council (ICC).

Speakers will include representatives from the U.S. Access Board, Office of Technical and Information Services, and State of Alabama - Governor Office on Disability.
