Accessibility Issues in Rail Transportation

2:00 pm - 3:30 pm EDT, April 03, 2018   |   Organized by: Mid-Atlantic ADA Center

Description
April 3, 2018 2:00 - 3:30 PM Eastern

Presented by TransCen, Inc. and the Mid-Atlantic ADA Center

This is a 90 minute session.

Accessibility in rail transportation in the United States varies tremendously. Newer light rail systems generally have accessible stations and accessible cars that provide universal access for all passengers. Older subway systems, commuter rail systems and Amtrak still have a long way to go to become fully accessible. Ken Shiotani, Senior Staff Attorney with the National Disability Rights Network (link is external) will discuss the ADA requirements for different types of rail equipment and rail stations. The presentation will include examples from around the country of stations and rail cars made more accessible for people with disabilities and a discussion of some pending rail car procurements and the choices transportation entities are contemplating regarding accessibility.
