Location: Webinar

Description: This 90-minute webinar will feature David Barton of the Northwest ADA Center. David will discuss Outdoor Developed Areas including camping facilities, picnic facilities, viewing areas, trails, and beach access routes, and how these relate to the accessibility requirements put out by the Access Board in 2013.

The new guidelines provide a great opportunity for all outdoor planners and managers to identify ways to make their recreational systems more sustainable and available to more hikers while maintaining the character of the setting and reducing maintenance costs in the long term.  Effective November 25, 2013 the U.S. Access Board issued a final rule that amends the Architectural Barriers Act Accessibility Guidelines by adding scoping and technical requirements for Outdoor Developed Areas including camping facilities, picnic facilities, viewing areas, trails, and beach access routes.  These guidelines apply to outdoor sites managed by the Federal government, including national parks and recreation areas covered by the Architectural Barriers Act.

This webinar session will provide participants with the opportunity to better understand these guidelines highlighting the different accessible route requirements in exterior built environments by focusing on trails and outdoor recreation access routes.  The presenter will also review other "outdoor constructed features" including camping and picnic areas.  This session will explain which agencies and lands are covered under these new guidelines, and how recreational facilities on non-federal lands can benefit from using these guidelines and best practices.

Live Closed Captioning will be provided for this webinar.

Participants have the option of requesting CRCC credits or a Letter of Attendance.
