Description: A large part of the role of the assistive technology practitioner in school settings is to provide implementation and training supports to teachers for the AT devices that are selected during the consideration process.  However, in many settings, time for quality face to face professional development is not readily available as often as is desired. In this session, participants will learn different ideas for creating quality professional development that promotes competency in the use and understanding of AT devices, not just attendance. In addition, participants will learn about how one school district is attempting to build competency through relevant incentive based learning.

  • Participants will learn about different options for delivering professional development with an emphasis on creating competency.

  • Participants will learn strategies to build admin support to create a competency based system.




Matthew Press, ATP

Matthew Press is an occupational therapist and assistive technology practitioner. He has practiced in the field of occupational therapy since 1999 and has focused in assistive technology since 2002, earning his ATP along the way. Matthew regularly presents at state and national conferences. He has taught courses in assistive technology at Adventist University, Northern Arizona University, AT Still University, and the University of Florida. He currently works in the Pendergast School District as an Assistive Technology Coordinator.
