Part II: Assistive Technology and Communication in Health Care Settings
The provision of auxiliary aids and services in health care settings includes a wide variety of available assistive technologies that support effective communication. An understanding of the available technology and the successful provision and administration of such technology is an important component of the effective communication process.
Discussion topics will include:
- Review of various assistive technologies and services available for people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, blind or visually impaired, and those who have speech-related disabilities. Examples include Video Remote Interpreting (VRI), assistive listening systems, communication access real-time translation (CART), and accessible electronic and information technology.
- Awareness of local resources and projects that can support health care provider’s effective communication obligations.
- Establishing internal procedures to ensure that health care staff can effectively provide necessary effective communication technology.
