Description: 

The Fundamentals course provides interested individuals with an overview of numerous areas of assistive technology.  It is also designed to broaden the knowledge of AT providers. Throughout this course, multiple case studies will be used to illustrate applications of principles and theories in assistive technology provision. 

While this course is designed to cover the basic areas of assistive technology service provision and aspects of this course may cover the general scope of the ATP certification exam, it is not a review course for the ATP exam.

Gerald "Jerry" Weisman, M.S.M.E., ATP

Is the owner and principal of Rehabilitation Technology Services, a rehabilitation engineering consulting firm. Prior to opening his own firm, he was the Director of the Rehabilitation Engineering Technology Program at Vermont Technical College. Jerry has been a rehabilitation engineer for 36 years and has worked as a service provider, researcher and educator. His previous positions include being the Assistant Director of the Vermont Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center for Low Back Pain, Director of Rehabilitation Engineering at Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center and Clinical Engineer at the Veterans Administration Rehabilitation Engineering Center. Jerry has authored numerous papers and book chapters on rehabilitation engineering, assistive technology and ergonomics.

Barbara Crane, PhD, PT, ATP

Is the coordinator of the Wheelchair Assessment Service at Gaylord Hospital in Connecticut. She has been a Physical Therapist for ten years and has worked in the rehabilitation field specializing in seating and wheeled mobility for much of that time. She earned a Master of Arts degree in 1994 in the field of Gerontology. She has lectured in and coordinated many local conferences focusing on Assistive Technology and its use with people with many different disabilities. She also has been an adjunct faculty member for several of the Physical Therapy programs in Connecticut and has lectured to students on assistive technology and wheelchair and seating evaluation.
