Seminar Topics
Universal Design Case Studies and Accessibility Code Updates Including the CBC Intervening Code Ammendments enforceable as of July 1, 2015.

Part I: 2.5 Hours
Universal Design presentation and illustratration of its principles applied in creative case studies, of inclusive and inspirational facilities. The benefits of mainstreaming Universal Design are discussed.  Understanding ergonomics and the impact of our design solutions on the functionality and improvement in the quality of life for people with a wide variety of abilities.The case studies include a large indoor/outdoor museum, Incheon International Airport and the Ed Robert’s Center that houses organizations of persons with disabilities.

Part II: 2.5 Hours
This seminar will feature an update of the key technical accessibility requirements of the 2013 CBC and 2010 ADA Standards (ADAS) including the CBC Intervening Code Adoption Cycle Supplement (effective July 1, 2015). It will highlight the new structure of the scoping provisions for projects that indicates what regulations apply and where in both CBC and ADAS. A discussion of proative and preventive measures that architects can use in their projects to avoid litigation. Best practices and common errors and omissions will be discussed.

• Understanding the benefits of Universal Design and Inspirational Case Studies.
• Update of the key technical accessibility requirements.
• Become  familiar with the new CBC Intervening Code Adoption Cycle Supplement, effective July 1, 2015.
• A review of the new project scoping structure in CBC and ADAS.
• Common errors and best practices will be discussed.

Gilda Puente-Peters, Principal of GPPA Architects, is a licensed Architect and a Certified Access Specialists with over 28 years of specialized experience in Accessibility, Universal Design and Education. Gilda is consider an Expert in Disabled Access and has developed an extensive curriculum and has provided accessibility trainings throughout the State of California and Internationally. Ms. Puente-Peters has served as a member of the California Division of the State Architect’s Subject Matter Experts Committee to advice on the development of the State’s Certified Access Specialist Program.

Gilda brings to her trainings a wealth of practical experience from the wide variety of services provided by her firm, including Transition Plans, Self-Evaluations, CASp accessibility surveys, Plan Review, Inspections, Policy Making, Training Programs and Code Compliance Consultations.
