Description: This course introduces students to the definition of universal design and the philosophy behind its concept. Students explore the social meaning of barriers in architecture learn about universal design as a means to remove unnecessary barriers to social participation. The course describes the birth of the concept of universal design out of the disability rights movement, utilizes case studies and examples to examine the development and power of universal design, and envisions the future of the universal design philosophy. The course builds upon the definition of universal design through the identification of seven basic Principles of Universal Design and eight Goals of Universal Design.
