Description: This course introduces students to the definition of universal design and the philosophy behind its concept. Students explore the social meaning of barriers in architecture learn about universal design as a means to remove unnecessary barriers to social participation. The course describes the birth of the concept of universal design out of the disability rights movement, utilizes case studies and examples to examine the development and power of universal design, and envisions the future of the universal design philosophy. The course builds upon the definition of universal design through the identification of seven basic Principles of Universal Design and eight Goals of Universal Design.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to…

  1. Identify and describe barriers in their everyday environments using concrete descriptors.

  2. Explain the concept and origins of universal design with case study examples.

  3. Criticize, compare, and contrast modernism with universal design using the concepts of usefulness and human-centered design.

  4. Discuss contemporary design issues that relate to universal design using examples to explain the relationships.

Registration Information

  • Dates/Times: Students will be responsible for completing 15 hours of work during a 4-week window (January 11 – February 8, 2019). There are no required sign in times; however, there are established due dates by which work must be completed.

  • CEUs: U.S. Architects will receive 15 HSW CEUs.
