Accessibility: Past and Present, by Michael Ellars, AIA, APX, CSI, CDT, LEED AP, CASp

“Accessibility” may seem like a modern buzzword, but the concept of making the built environment accommodating to persons with disabilities has been around for quite some time. This presentation will provide a brief overview of construction-related accessibility standards and their historical evolution. Michael Ellars is an architect with DLR Group and an instructor at the USC School of Architecture. He regularly teaches licensure and accessibility seminars for his office, local AIA & CSI Chapters, and other organizations.

Signage for Accessibility, by Janis Kent, FAIA, CASp

One of the more important elements of navigating thru the built environment is signage. We will review different sign types with their various requirements and components per 2010 ADAS and the 2016 CBC leading to a better understanding and better integration into our language of architecture.

Janis Kent, FAIA, an Architect and a CASp has been involved with Access in the built environment since the mid-1980’s. She is the Founding President of the Certified Access Specialist Institute, and is designated a Subject Matter Expert by the CA Division of the State Architect. Janis has authored books on Accessibility used by architects, designers, and building officials, and speaks nationally on Access.

Accessible Door Openings, by Scott A. Sabatini, DAOC, FDHI, FDAI, CSI, CCPR

Attendees will learn the basic components of an accessible door opening, know how to specify these components, and avoid common mistakes made when specifying accessible openings. Scott is Principal of Door + Hardware Consultants, Inc., an independent consulting firm. Scott has over forty years experience in door hardware and is past National President of the Door & Hardware Institute.

The Ten Steps to Access, Common Sense Considerations Based on ADASAD 2010 & CBC 11B, by James V. Vitale, AIA, LEED AP, CASp 007, RCI, ACTCB

Taught from the perspective of an architect, plan reviewer, inspector and expert witness, “from the boards to the trenches”, this presentation will provide recent examples from city, state, and federal projects.  The presentation will also include a review of the changes to the 2016 CBC Chapter 11B that take effect in Jan. 2017.  Jim is a DSA Senior Architect-Access Compliance; a past adjunct professor in the Construction Technology Department at Mt. San Antonio College, a subject matter expert to the state architect for CASp program implementation, an expert witness in federal courts, and has recently taught a 36 week course on the ADA/CBC to the San Fernando Valley Chapter of the AIA. He is the recipient the first ACIA Robert F. Lynch, FAIA award for outstanding contributions to the field of the ADA.
