Description: This 60 minute webinar will discuss and demonstrate how to make 10 different low-cost assistive technology solutions that can be created to support individuals who experience vision impairments. This includes: one minute scan and read stations; creating A dot maker for QR codes; making tactile graphics overlays on the fly for children books; creating page lifters; creating a dual iPad sliding track solution for near and distance magnification; creating a slant boards and book holders that raise documents and print material; making a vertical iPad mounting solution for eye level magnification; and creating tactile overlays and key guards for the iPad.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify at least 5 solutions that can be created to support individuals who experience vision loss.

  2. Identify at least 5 materials that can be used in creating solutions for blind and low vision.

  3. Identify at least 3 different methods that AT solutions for creating solutions for blind and low vision.

Clinical Associate Professor University of New Hampshire

Therese Willkomm, PhD, is the Director of New Hampshire’s State Assistive Technology Program with the Institute on Disability at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) and is an associate professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy. Dr. Willkomm is known nationally and internationally as “The MacGyver” of Assistive Technology and has designed and fabricated over one thousand solutions for individuals with disabilities including her patented A.T. Pad Stand, a multiuse assistive technology mounting device. She is also known throughout the county for her trainings on awesome iPAD apps and adaptations. She has presented her work in 42 states, eight foreign countries and three U.S. Territories; has written 22 assistive technology related publications including her new book titled: “Assistive Technology Solutions in Minutes – Book 2 – Ordinary Items, Extraordinary Solutions ; and has appeared on RFD TV, CNN and most recently NPR Science Friday.
