This is Structured Negotiation, the collaborative dispute resolution method described in Lainey Feingold’s new book.

Over the past 20 years, author Lainey Feingold, her co-counsel, and clients, have used Structured Negotiation to advance and protect the rights of blind people to accessible technology and information. Walmart, Major League Baseball, Bank of America and the City of San Francisco are just a few of the dozens of entities that have agreed to resolve legal claims in Strucutred Negotiation instead of battling in court.  With publication of Lainey's book by the American Bar Association, this effective process is now available to lawyers and advocates in a wide range of disciplines. Jessie Lorenz, Executive Director of the San Francisco Independent Living Resource Center, has participated in Structured Negotiations as an individual claimant and as a representative of an organizational claimant.

About Lainey Feingold:  Lainey Feingold graduated from Hastings College of the Law in 1981 and is an internationally recognized disability civil rights lawyer who has practiced Structured Negotiation for more than 20 years. She received a California Lawyer Attorney of the Year (CLAY) award in 2000 and in 2014 for her work in Structured Negotiation, and was a founding member of the Disability Rights Bar Association. In addition to handling cases, Lainey mentors lawyers in the practice of Structured Negotiation and speaks, writes, and teaches about digital accessibility and Structured Negotiation. Her book, Structured Negotiation: A Winning Alternative to Lawsuits, was published by the American Bar Association in August 2016.

About Jessie Lorenz: Jessie Lorenz is the executive director at the Independent Living Resource Center, San Francisco. She holds a general mediation certificate and recently started offering mediation services through the ILRC. Jesse has participated in Structured Negotiation cases and feels that the process is invaluable for educating municipalities, financial institutions and other stakeholders not just about their legal responsibilities but about providing inclusive services to individuals who cannot read print.
