To achieve the promise of community integration, we must ensure that older adults and people with disabilities are given full and equal opportunities to live, work, receive needed supports, and manage their own lives in the places and ways they choose. Even so, people with challenges in decision-making have historically been kept separate from their communities and had their rights taken away through overbroad or undue guardianship. In this webinar, panelists will discuss new and innovative ways for older adults and people with disabilities to receive community-based supports and services that can increase their self-determination, independence, and access to improved life outcomes.

Erica Wood

Erica Wood is assistant director of the American Bar Association Commission on Law and Aging. She has been associated with the Commission since 1980, where she has worked primarily on issues concerning adult guardianship, legal services delivery, dispute resolution, health and long-term care, and access to court. She has participated in national studies on public guardianship and guardianship monitoring; and played a role in convening national consensus conferences on guardianship. Prior to 1980, she served as staff attorney at Legal Research and Services for the Elderly, National Council of Senior Citizens. Ms. Wood received her B.A. from the University of Michigan and her J.D. from the George Washington University. In 2013 she received the Isabella Horton Grant Guardianship Award from the National College of Probate Judges.

Jonathan Martinis

Jonathan Martinis in the Senior Director for Law and Policy at the Burton Blatt Institute. Jonathan Martinis has over 20 years’ experience representing people with disabilities in cases under the Americans with Disabilities Act, The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, The Social Security Act and other civil rights laws. In 2013, he represented Margaret "Jenny" Hatch in the "Justice for Jenny" case, which held that Ms. Hatch has a right to use Supported Decision-Making instead of being subjected to a permanent, plenary guardianship. Martinis is based at BBI’s Washington DC office, and leads BBI’s national and international efforts to ensure that older adults and people with disabilities receive appropriate supports and services, including Supported Decision-Making, to lead inclusive, independent, and self-determined lives.

Marcia Tewell

Marcia Tewell is the director of the Colorado Developmental Disability Council since 2000. The Colorado Developmental Disability Council works toward system change and innovation with the goal of supporting policies that support individuals with disabilities to have real lives. Marcia is a graduate of Syracuse University during the days when Burton Blatt was a professor and Gothenburg University, Sweden. Marcia was an advocate within the education system for many years and then transitioned to advocacy at the legislative and system change arena.
