The State of California website, according to the Assisted Living Waiver (ALW) program, defines assisted living for the State of California in a specific way (as most states do), based on the standards set by the National Assisted Living Workgroup – with well defined standards and guidelines.

“Assisted living is a state regulated and monitored residential long-term care option” that provides specific services, which include, but are not limited to 24 hour awake staff, provision and oversight personnel and supportive services, health related services including skilled nursing, social services, recreational activities, meals, housekeeping, laundry and transportation.
