The State of New Jersey’s Department of Health and Senior Services has a robust section of their website dedicated to the state’s assisted living and long term care facilities. Officially, New Jersey uses the term “Assisted Living Residence” which essentially means that the facility is licensed by the Department, and provides “apartment-style housing and congregate dining and to assure that assisted living services are available when needed, to four or more adult persons unrelated to the proprietor.”
***The Median Monthly Cost for Assisted Living in New Jersey (Private, One-Bedroom) is: $4,950

Assisted Living Tidbits:
Assisted Living Residences, Facilities and Programs: Did you know that in New Jersey, ‘assisted living facilities’ are more commonly referred to as ‘assisted living residences.’ However, for marketing purposes, you may still see the word ‘facilities’ used – as that is generally the more commonly accepted term.
In addition, New Jersey officially defines Assisted Living Residences (ALR’s) differently than Assisted Living Programs (ALP’s). Basically, “Residences” are facilities that offer more of an apartment style housing environment. Residents generally eat together in a common dining area, and rooms are usually private, with private bathrooms and kitchens (or kitchenettes). “Programs” are more geared towards in-home personal care, and other health related services – most often for residents of subsidized housing buildings. In sum, the major difference is that ALP’s are not separate facilities.
For the most part, on this site, we will list Assisted Living Residences. However, in towns or areas where there are no ALR’s, we will list the available ALP’s (programs).
