As with many states, Texas has a unique, and specific way that it categorizes assisted living facilities – much of which has to do with the facility size and services offered.*** The Median Monthly Cost for Assisted Living in Texas (Private, One-Bedroom) is: $3,515

Currently, the Long Term Care Quality Reporting System of Texas consider Assisted Living Facilities as establishments that “furnish food and shelter to four or more persons, unrelated to the owner, and provide assisted living services, minor treatment under the direction and supervision of a physician, or services that meet some need beyond basic provision of food, shelter, and laundry.”

From there, each facility is designated either Type A, B, C, or E. Generally, Type A facilities only accept residents who are able to evacuate the premises unassisted, and don’t need nighttime supervision. Type B is for residents who don’t qualify for Type A, but who are also not permanently bedfast. Type C facilities are 4-bed facilities that “meet the minimum standards and rules for enrollment in the DADS Adult Foster Care home program.” Type E facilities are similar to Type A, but are limited to no greater than 16 beds, and don’t need to have the same type of fire alarm system that Type A facilities are.
