One of the most prominent and visible agencies in the Detroit area is the Detroit Area Agency on Aging, which exists “To educate, advocate and promote healthy aging…to enable people to make choices about home and community-based services and long-term care that will improve their quality of life.”
The programs and services provided by the DAAA include: care management; Detroit Meals on Wheels program (which sponsors many congregate meal sites throughout the city, and also coordinates holiday meals); information and assistance, and housing assistance. Additionally, the Detroit Area Agency on Aging ‘funds and monitors nearly 40 community agencies which provide most of the direct eldercare services in the Detroit area.’

We would also like to point out that Oakland County, Michigan has a Long Term Care Ombudsman, which exists to provide services to elders and their families to make sure that resident’s rights are being followed, as well as federal guidelines. Assisted Living Directory has created a Long Term Care Ombudsman page to help individuals and families to understand better what a LTC Ombudsman can do, and the important role they play within any senior population or community.
