Location: Minot, ND.
Mission
To advocate for the freedom of choice for individuals with disabilities to live independently through the removal of all barriers.
Description
Independence, Inc. is a Resource Center for independent living (CIL). CIL’s are private, nonprofit corporations that provide services to maximize the independence of individuals with disabilities and the accessibility of the communities they live in. Centers are funded in part by the Department of Education, the Rehabilitation Services Administration, fee-for-services programs and private donations. There are over 300 CIL’s across the nation.
CIL’s are consumer-controlled, community-based, cross-disability, non-residential agencies that are designed and operated within a local community by individuals with disabilities and provide an array of independent living services. At a minimum, centers are required to provide the core services of information and referral, independent living skills training, peer mentoring, and individual and systems advocacy.
In order to ensure that we are consumer controlled, over 50% of our staff, management staff, and board of directors are people with disabilities.
Independence, Inc. serves an eleven-county in northwestern North Dakota including: Bottineau, Burke, Divide, McHenry, McKenzie, Mountrail, Pierce, Renville, Rolette, Ward and Williams counties.
Since 1995, Independence has worked to make Minot and the surrounding counties a better place to live, work and play for people with disabilities.
