Mounting Horizons, Inc. (MHI) is a 501(c) 3 community based organization that was established in 2003. Our mission is to provide services for people in need promoting independence, self sufficiency, and advocating for the full inclusion in society. MHI began its mission by partnering with schools and community organizations to service all age groups in various areas of Houston. Some of our services included vocational training and job placement, youth after-school programs, recovery support and GED preparation. In 2007, MHI established a partnership with the Department of Rehabilitative Services (DARS) to begin assisting individuals with disabilities with gaining independence and self-sufficiency.

With this contract we provide job readiness training which include resume building, interviewing skills, completing job applications, and job etiquette training. We also provide job placement, vocational and social adjustment training, and supportive employment services. Mounting Horizons opened the Mounting Horizons Center for Independent Living (MHCIL) in Galveston County in 2009. Our five core services are advocacy, peer mentoring, independent living skills, youth transition services, and information and referrals. MHI’s goal is empowering individuals to exercise choices to maintain or increase their independence and self-reliance.

MHCIL South is currently located on Galveston Island and MHCIL North is currently located in the Clear Lake area on the mainland. MHCIL currently provides independent living skills training, job placement assistance, youth transition classes, health and wellness training, travel training, peer mentoring, self- advocacy and disability awareness workshops for individuals with disabilities. MHCIL is a consumer-controlled state association. We are the only CIL in the Galveston County area and serve all residents in the county. We partner with Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to provide free transportation assistance to and from work and/or job related events. Mounting Horizons currently provides services in both Harris and Galveston Counties to fulfill our mission.
