Who We Are
In 2010, 16% of American children lived in families with incomes below the poverty threshold. With more than 2.3 million grandparents raising their grandchildren, the heads of many of these households couldn't keep up with repairs either by themselves or by hiring professionals.
In 2002, Rebuilding Together's rehabilitation of homes and non-profit community centers and childcare facilities helped 52,970 children have a warm, dry, and secure place to grow up. Many homes with kids were among the 3,180 in which RT volunteers upgraded electrical wiring in 2002, eliminating fire hazards and the risk of electrical shock. More were among the 870 homes that were without heat until RT showed up, among the 3,480 that received plumbing repairs, and among the 500 in which new stoves replaced old non-functioning ones. Also in 2002, Rebuilding Together volunteers nationwide installed 6,080 smoke alarms--simple, lifesaving improvements--many in homes of families with young children.
Who Is Helped
Rebuilding Together provides assistance to homeowners who cannot cover the costs of needed home repairs. Usually the individuals are disabled and/or low income. However, non-profit facilities such as schools or shelters may also be selected.
How It Works
As many as 75 volunteers work on a particular project. The number mainly depends on how much work has to be done. Some companies organize teams of volunteers. Some people show up simply as individuals.
Not A New Program
This program--previously called Christmas in April--facilitated a name change to Rebuilding Together. The seeds for the national program were planted in 1972. The program has grown every year, and now has many year-round affiliates. Rebuilding Together, Grays Harbor plans to be year-round soon.
