Mission
Rebuilding Together is the leading national volunteer organization that, in partnership with the community, rehabilitates the houses of low-income homeowners, particularly people with disabilities and the elderly so they may continue to live in warmth, safety, and independence.
What Is The Need
-
One in four Americans is shelter poor.
-
More than 85% of people over 65 want to remain in their homes.
-
Injuries from falls kill more people over 65 than cancer, strokes and heart disease combined.
-
Locally, 31% of our elderly say they have great difficulty performing home maintenance tasks.
Some examples of our work include: installing ramps, remodeling vital areas of the home for wheelchair accessibility, installing grab bars, installing roll-in showers, improving weatherization, and repairing areas such as windows, flooring, and doors to make the home safer.
How Does It Work
-
We receive referrals from community agencies, neighbors, public notices and self-referrals.
-
The clients are then selected based on established criteria (clients own their own homes, but because of physical limitation or lack of income, they cannot cover the cost of repairs).
-
Once eligible for Rebuilding Together support, the home repair project is reviewed for its complexity and materials needs.
-
If the project is within the scope of Rebuilding Together's abilities, a volunteer team and/or contractor is organized and the repairs are completed.
How is Rebuilding Together Funded?
Individuals, churches, civic organizations and foundations donate funds. Local building suppliers may also provide materials. All donations are tax deductible.
