In 2010 the Rothschild Foundation initiated a Task Force under the auspices of the AIA Design for Aging Community which is looking at how modifications to the ADA Access Guidelines might better support quality of life for elders in residential communities.
The initial focus of these recommendations will be for specific changes to Accessibility Standards for Nursing Home & Assisted Living Residences in Toileting and Bathing for Elders. The rationale for this initiative is that existing ADA guidelines were not created specifically to accommodate the physical challenges of an aging population. A draft white paper supported by empirical research has been developed by this Task Force, and is available for viewing on the website.
