Sunrise House Treatment Program: Substance Abuse Among Physically Disabled Individuals - Lafayette, NJ
Substance abuse can be found among all groups of people. When it comes to physically disabled individuals, there may be special circumstances around their abuse of a drug related to their disability, especially if chronic pain is involved. These circumstances require special consideration from anyone looking to treat one of these individuals for a substance use disorder.
There is some debate over the rate of substance abuse among the physically disabled. Some studies have found that they are more likely to abuse intoxicants than the able-bodied population, while others have found that they actually abuse drugs less. What we do know is that that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Disability found that 74.6 million people in the US have some kind of disability, and that 4.7 million adults in the US have both a substances use disorder and a disability.
It can be difficult to determine rates of substance abuse since the population of physically disabled persons is so much smaller than the general population. Also, these individuals are prescribed medications that are often used at a much higher rate due to pain, mobility issues, and mental health issues. When you need these medications to function, and when your functioning looks different than that of the able-bodied majority, it can be hard to determine where the line between simple use and abuse is located.
Sunrise House Addiction Treatment Programs
Addiction Recovery Program
Sunrise House uses a compassionate, client-focused approach in providing substance abuse and alcohol treatment for adults. By developing individualized treatment plans for our clients, we are able to address their specific addiction circumstances, and help focus on their clinical issues. Our programs are built upon research-based therapeutic modalities and 12-Step recovery principles that empower our clients.
Motivational Interviewing (MI)
At Sunrise House, our licensed therapists use Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques to “meet the clients where they are” and assist them in moving their ambivalence about treatment and/or addiction toward a desire for meaningful, genuine changes in their lives. MI is a client-focused and collaborative approach that is effective in treating individuals struggling with addiction. This therapeutic approach concentrates on the client’s specific goals, personal strengths, and values along with issues the client feels ready to tackle. Our program helps the client recognize the choices, changes, and adjustments necessary to move towards a more positive lifestyle.
Individualized Treatment Plans
Because the disease of addiction is complicated and unique for each individual, one treatment plan can’t work for every client. We provide customized treatment plans as a key feature of our program by examining each client’s strengths, treatment needs, coping abilities, and preferences. By taking into consideration these factors, we can work with the client, his or her primary therapist, and our treatment team to meet the client’s needs. Upon admission to Sunrise House and throughout the treatment stay, our clinical team evaluates the client’s progress and adjusts the treatment plan as clinically necessary.
12-Step Meetings
The Sunrise House recovery philosophy uses 12-Step recovery principles and traditions as a major component throughout our treatment program. Along with attending individual and group addiction therapies, participating in 12-Step meetings provides our clients with a structured, supportive group setting. For many clients this fellowship of peers in a safe environment facilitates sharing and discussion of feelings, struggles, and personal recovery stories. Attending 12-Step groups has been shown to increase lengths of abstinence (Journal of Substance Addiction Treatment, April 2014).

Client Responsibility
When the client shows a willingness to change and commits wholeheartedly to his or her treatment program, recovery is possible. Part of the recovery process involves acknowledging the addiction, looking inward, and discarding harmful behaviors. Positive life changes are attainable when the client engages in therapy sessions, commits to treatment, and attends classes. Sunrise House can direct each client onto a path of change, wellness, renewed health, self-direction, and fulfillment of potential.
