Most company and organization websites have them: a slideshow or "carousel" of photos or information that rotate on their home page. In an article "The Unbearable Inaccessibility of Slideshows," author Gian Wild demonstrates examples of inaccessible slideshow design, based on the current Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). Further, she includes 5 principles that must be met to create an accessible slideshow: 1) Allow the user to stop all movement; 2) Provide visible controls accessible to the keyboard, mouse and touch; 3) Provide a valid and understandable focus order through the slideshow; 4) Valid coding and style sheets; and, 5) Provide a meaningful alternative to the slideshow.
