Applicability:

  • New Construction

Type of entity:

  • ADA Covered Facilities
  • Multi-Family Residential
Questions, Facts, and Assumptions:

Hello!

Hope you are all doing well 🙂 I have a question regarding standard roll-in type showers. There's a drawing for this question at the bottom. This bathroom would be in a mobility dwelling unit for a covered multi-family housing site (2022 CBC 11B applies because it is publicly funded). The code states:

"11B-608.2.2 Standard roll-in type shower compartments. Standard roll-in type shower compartments shall be 30 inches (762 mm) wide minimum by 60 inches (1524 mm) deep minimum clear inside dimensions measured at center points of opposing sides with a full opening width on the long side."

At a site I’m consulting for, the architect wants to install a fold-down grab bar to help achieve clearances in the bathroom (turning radius, lavatory clearance, etc). Since there’s no maximum length for a side wall in a standard roll-in shower, do you think a pull-down grab bar would still be allowed? Or would the presence of the lavatory on the other side wall make this setup non-compliant with the code because the side grab bar isn't installed on the side wall?

I’d appreciate your insight. Thanks!

Detailed Analysis:

My guess is a foldable grab bar would not be allowed because the code states in 11B-608.3.2 "Grab bars shall be provided on the back wall and the side wall opposite the seat." However, I still figured I'd ask.

Conclusion/Summary:

Thank you for your insight!
